Best Mexican Imports
La Mariposa 2007

That drive down to Brownsville can be a real hassle, and they're shooting people in Nuevo Laredo a little too often to make shopping there worthwhile. Best to let La Mariposa handle the Mexican importing for you. No, they don't carry cheap prescription drugs, but they do have a lovely selection of Mexican folk art, jewelry, embroidered clothing and home décor items imported from and inspired by our neighbors to the south. Dig their Day of the Dead trinkets and sculptures, which make great gifts for those who deserve little skeletons.

La Mariposa
La Mariposa is Spanish for "butterfly," which is quite fitting for this Mexican imports store on Henderson Avenue. Butterflies are beautiful, delicate creatures admired for their vibrant colors and grace--much like La Mariposa. Upon entry into the shop, visitors are met with an array of bright colors. From the Talavera pottery to the Dia de los Muertos figurines, La Mariposa is filled with beautiful handcrafted items from our neighbors south of the border. There's clothing, jewelry, handbags, piñatas--and just when you think you've seen it all, you stumble upon another hidden gem that has your credit card number written all over it.
Crossing the Border
I begin my spree at La Mariposa, the happiest shop in town. Looking for a bride-and-groom pinata? How about an antique sombrero? Well, this cultural haven has both. Owner Ray Grawunder makes four trips to Mexico per year in search of maracas, serapes, paper flowers, pewter crosses, and handmade jewelry. Looking as if a rainbow exploded, the back room of the place is filled with so many pinatas you can't even walk without smashing the brim of a hat or some other paper mache piece. The prices are reasonable, and your saved a trip across the border.

Since its inception in 1977, Ray Grawunder has offered many one-of-a-kind, handmade creatice pieces of mexican art. Here you will find party supplies, festive clothing from Mexico, Central, and South America, along with paper flowers, pinatas, folk art, hand-carved Oaxacan wooden animals and beautiful tile mirrors. 2813 N. Henderson Ave. 214-826-0069.

Once you're all cultured out, it's time to git shopping! Your best bet is to head north on I-75 to Knox/Henderson, home of unique gift and upscale furniture shops. Nearby is my favorite store, La Mariposa (2813 N. Henderson Ave), a dealer in Mexican folk art (clothing, Day of the Dead dolls, etc.)

Shoshana Portnoy
Molinillos cost between $4 and $20, depending on how elaborately carved they are. You can find them at La Mariposa in Dallas.

More than two decades old and still going strong, this colorful shop keeps customers happy with a wide selection of embroidered blouses, dresses, and Mexican skirts-- also search out the leather huaraches (woven sandals) and bright, playful plastic totes.
